Johnston began the 2017-18 season as a Bridgeport Sound Tigers player, but was recalled by the team on January 19, 2018, to replace Casey Cizikas. In a 7-3 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks, Johnston scored his first NHL goal. His first NHL goal was against the Vegas Golden Knights on January 25, 2018. This helped the Islanders win 2-1. He played in 24 games for the Islanders, scoring 3 goals and 6 point.
