Along the way, they met the Lillelid family at an interstate highway rest area in Greeneville, Tennessee. Norway-born Vidar Lillelid (age 34), his Honduran-American wife Delfina (28), their daughter Tabitha (6), and son Peter (2). The Lillelids were Jehovah’s Witnesses, and dedicated to proselytizing their faith to others, including the young people they encountered at the rest area. The Lillelids were interested in converts; Natasha and the others were interested in the family’s van, having already discussed possibly car-jacking a bigger and more dependable vehicle to replace their cramped and likely unreliable Citation.
Christa Pike, a death row inmate, and Cornett allegedly attacked Patricia Jones on August 24, 2001. Jones was almost strangled to death by a shoelace after Jones and Pike were taken into a cell together during a fire alarm. Although Cornett was believed to be involved, investigators did not find enough evidence to charge her with aiding Pike. She was later found guilty of attempted murder.
Natasha and her codefendants pled guilty on March 13, 1998 to all charges. This avoided possible death sentences for her, and three other minors, who were aged 18 or older. Howell and Risner, who were minors, were not eligible for the death penalty. However, they accepted the deal after consulting counsel. Although Natasha accepted the plea deal, court testimony proved that she didn’t actually shoot the victims. Cornett testified that she tried unsuccessfully to prevent the deaths. Conforming to the agreement, Natasha was sentenced to three life sentences without parole and two additional 25-year sentences for attempted murder and kidnapping.
Cornett married a long-time friend named Stephen Cornett on her 17th birthday. Natasha told Women’s Entertainment Network interviewers in a 2009 documentary that, when Stephen ended the marriage after about six months, she “caved in” emotionally and was psychologically devastated. She also indicated this failed relationship exacerbated her existing mental health problems.
