From 1953 to her death in 2001, he was married to Roberta “Bobbi” Russell. The University of Arizona basketball court, named the Lute Olson Court in honor of the Olsons is named the Bobbi Olson Court. Bobbi and he had five children together. He married Christine Jack Toretti in 2003.
He was the University of Iowa Hawkeyes coach from 1974 to 1983 and was twice named Big Ten Coach of Year.
