In the October 2006 episode on the Globe Trekker Venice City Guide episode, Shapiro revealed that she attended Tufts University (majoring in history and theatre) together with Oliver Platt, who recognized her among the crowd when she was in the crowd at for the Venice Film Festival, where Platt was in the audience to promote Casanova.
Prior to hosting Globe Trekker/Pilot guides, Shapiro appeared in various roles on both television and in films. Eventually, she was involved in several documentaries including co-production/direction duties on 2001’s Promises, which won two 2002 Emmy Awards, for Best Documentary and Outstanding Background Analysis, and was nominated for best Documentary Feature at the 74th Academy Awards. Promises attempts to make human the conflict between the Arabs and Israelis by studying the conflict from a microcosmic perspective through the eyes of seven Palestinian and Israeli children who live in or around the city that is divided, Jerusalem.
