Through the mother of their father, Frieda and Nicholas are descendants of Nicholas Ferrar (1592-1637). She relocated from Perth, Western Australia in 1988. She later moved to Wooroloo which is a tiny hamlet north of Perth in the year 1991. The Australian landscape became the subject for a lot of her paintings. She was made an Australian citizen in the year 1992.
Between 2006 and 2008 she wrote a weekly poem in The Times newspaper and in 2008 she was the chair judge of the Forward Prizes for Poetry and as a judge at The National Poetry Competition.
