Erek Barron is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on February 20, 1974 in Washington, D.C., United States. While in office, Barron was also a prominent lawmaker in fighting the opioid crisis . He also in 2016 he drafted bipartisan legislation that strengthened the state’s drug surveillance program to combat the abuse of prescription drugs and to prevent overprescribing. The 2017 legislative session was a success. Barron has been successful when he included the opioid treatment and overdose prevention guidelines within the Heroin and Opioid Prevention Effort (HOPE) and Treatment Act of 2017. In general this HOPE Act is a national legislative framework that aims to tackle the rising addiction to heroin and opioids in Maryland through in addition to raising the amount of money available to behavioral health community professionals as well as expanding the grants available in drug court services as well as a toll-free crisis hotline for the entire state and making it mandatory for that the State Health Department to establish crisis treatment centers throughout the State; and the requirement that hospitals establish protocols for patients suffering from overdose and reducing the barriers to accessing overdose medications; and providing treatment education to patients.
Barron was sworn in an elected Member of the Maryland House of Delegates on January 14th 15th, 2015. He was appointed to the Health and Government Operations Committee and its government operations and health facilities for long-term care and occupations subcommittees. Additionally, he is a part of the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland and an affiliate member with the Women Legislators of Maryland.
in 2013, Barron received a call from the American Bar Association Death Penalty Representation Project to take on pro bono appeals in Isaiah McCoy v. State of Delaware in which McCoy was found guilty for capital murder, and was sentenced death. In the appeal to the Delaware Supreme Court, the Court was unanimously able to overturn McCoy’s convictions and death sentence on the basis of prosecutorial mistakes and voir dire errors. The prosecutor who was the original in charge of the case was suspended due to his conduct during the trial. After remand, McCoy was acquitted on all charges following the bench trial.
In 2016, Barron was a key co-author of The Justice Reinvestment Act, a bi-partisan, landmark criminal justice reform bill designed to enhance public safety, substantially reduce corrections costs, and increase recidivism. In 2017, Barron played a key role in reform of Maryland’s pretrial system by joining with fellow lawmakers in requesting a landmark legal opinion from the State Attorney General and subsequently helping to form and protect the new pretrial rules developed by the Maryland Court of Appeals.
