Lefferts had been traded by the Padres with the Orioles in exchange for Erik Schullstrom on August 31 of 1992. The deal that was completed the following day on September 4, when Ricky Gutierrez was also sent to San Diego.

Lefferts is current pitcher to score a walk-off home run, which occurred the 25th of April, 1986, in the the 12th inning, against his team, the San Francisco Giants’ Greg Minton. At the close of the 2008 season , he was alongside Hall of Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander as 88th on MLB All-Time Games Pitched List (696).

Lefferts contributed to helping the Padres to win in 1984 the National League Pennant and the Giants won their 1987 National League West division title and the 1989 National League Pennant. In the winter of 1985, Lefferts was offered by the New York Mets in exchange for outfielder Lenny Dykstra, but Mets general manager Frank Cashen declined the offer. The pitching he played in 83 games during 1986 were not only the best in to the National League but remains a Padres single season record.
