Marucci was born in Malvern (PA), the son of a certified accountant. He attended Haverford High School and was a three-time PIAA state champion golfer. Marucci received a golf scholarship to the University of Maryland. He is a four time Pennsylvania Amateur champion (1982-83, 1987, 1987, 1991), and two-time winner the Philadelphia Amateur. He also competed in 1996 Masters Tournament. Marucci was introduced in 1995 to the national golf audience when he faced Tiger Woods, a 19-year-old, down to the last round of the U.S. Amateur. He lost by two strokes. Marucci was a member of the U.S. Walker Cup team in 1997 and 1995. He went 3-0 in foursomes and 1-0-1 in singles, helping the U.S. win the 1997 tournament. He was also the captain of the United States’ Walker Cup team wins in 2007 and 2009. Marucci won 2008 the U.S. Senior Amateur, beating George Zahringer 2 up at Shady Oaks Country club in Fort Worth, Texas. This was his first and only USGA Championship. Marucci is a long-standing member of the Merion Golf Club. He was vice-chairman for the 2013 113th U.S. Open, which was held at the Merion.
