Betty Carter (born May 16, 1929) was an American jazz singer and composer known for her improvisational technique and scat singing. She began singing professionally in the 1940s and was a major influence on singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Nancy Wilson. Carter was also a composer and arranger, writing over 200 songs. She released over 20 albums and won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance in 1988. Carter was inducted into the Downbeat Jazz Hall of Fame in 2006. She passed away in September 1998.
